I've enjoyed the photos and videos everyone has posted of the overhauled RSG 41. Watching
the videos I started to wonder how much has been replaced over the years.
The Knott's Berry Farm engines RGS 41 and D&RG 340 have been in almost continuous use
for about 140 years now. How much of the original 1881 engine is left? I would guess the following
has been replaced:
- Boilers at least once.
- The cab - it is metal and not original wood
- The same for the cowcatcher
- Pilot wheels (I remember one of the engines had pilot wheel that had a much
later year cast into the surface - late1940's I think)
- Tires
- Bearings (axels, siderods, valve gear, crosshead, ect.)
- Anything else?
- Also I seem to remember that 340 had it's tender swapped for a smaller one when it was sold to Knott's.
So that leaves what? About 50% - 60% of the original?
