Was it wrecked or burnt or suffered some other sort of mishap? Or was the as-built car merely inadequate for the tasks assigned it?

It does not look particularly light weight. That combined with the passenger-style trucks gives the visusal impression of a vehicle that probably had a decent ride quality.
