Re: Running time from Antonito to Cumbres. I can't give a running time for that stretch, but the train only left Alamosa in mid-morning and arrived in Chama with enough daylight left for us to drive to Monero and photograph 497 leaving Monero with the eastbound freight with some light remaining. Considering the short days, Extra 493 West made pretty good time to the pass and down to Chama.

Catching up with 493, here is 493 almost at the summit. The tiny figure at the back of the train is Alva Morrison. I don't think I knew him at the time. We only got acquainted on John West's Guatemala trip in the spring of 1971, but later I made a Christmas card of this scene and Alva wrote back that this was the first time he received a Christmas card with himself in the picture!
