Re: Alpine Tunnel ---- East side & The Countess Zabriskie

On page 145 of Do Hellmers book Historic Alpine Tunnel is another Alpine Tunnel history tidbit.

Apparently a woman called "Countess Zabriskie inhabited one of the east side construction camps after the workmen left for several years. The photo from across the valley on page 144 shows the East Portal as it looked years ago before the area above the opening eroded to its present state and the access road going to the camp. It may have been called Streeters Camp. A search turned up a photo and a few details.
