O. M. G., Olaf -
You sure have a knack for stirring up good memories!! Back in 1966 one of my roommates at UCLA invited me to spend Turkey Day with his relatives in Prescott, Arizona (a short distance S.E. of Nohitsnorunsno, Ariz.)* if I would drive. Totally on a wild whim, on Friday morning I asked him if he'd ever been to Colorado, and when he said he hadn't we hopped in the car and headed northeast. Upon arrival in Durango I drove directly to the RR yard and asked the first person I saw if any trains were due in. He told me about a Farmington turn –
the one in your photos, above – and we set out to find it, but #484 snuck past us where the highway is away from the railroad. Probably about Bondad we gave up, and went back to The Western Steak House, across from the Strater in those days, for dinner. After a burger & a beer I dragged Bill back down to the yard, where we found #484 simmering outside the roundhouse. We spent an hour or more in the cab keeping warm and chatting with the hostler before tracking down a cheap hotel room for the night, and spent Saturday and a good part of Sunday getting home to Los Angeles.
