Speaking from experience, Steve -
When I was on "sore throat watch" with the American Freedom Train (a combination of light hostling & heavy p.r. duty)* – talking to folks who came up the ramp to get a look into the cab of gently hissing red-white-&-Pepsi-blue #4449 – I don't think a single day went by without at least one person asking,
"Is this a diesel?". I think Willie's concern here is not that people mistake #114 for a steam locomotive but that they mistake it for something histörical to the D&RGW whose histœry the C&TS is obligated by its Charter to accurately preserve and present to the public — 98% of whom are not foamers.

p.s. IIRC, at least one poor soul, not really even a foamer, whose only railroad experience apparently was with a model train as a kid, wanted to know how we hid the worm gear so well
