The great wreck scene in The Train is the most spectacular I've ever seen using REAL locomotives. The shot where the locomotive driver ends up just above the camera lens is fantastic and has an story behind it. The film crew originally placed three $60,000 Panavision cameras just off the right of way to catch the locomotive rushing towards them and then careening off the track. The film crew had one extra camera that someone deiced to bury in the roadbed at the last minute. When the wreck actually occured the locomotive ran much farther than intended and demolished $180,000 of Panavisions's finest (you can actually seen one of these cameras fly in a widescreen version of the film). The last minute shot in the roadbed was the only surviving film so it was used.
By the way- Burt Lancaster did all of his own stunts, including running the locomotives as well as pouring babbit and carrying a side rod. One of the greats of the film industry...
