Dear Kevin:
I do all restorations of whistles at the D&SNG
including every Ex D&RGW whistles we own.I have been doing whistle repair and restoring for 28 years including my own collection. There is nothing wrong with bead blasting.I have found that
many times unless the whistle is simply full of holes many times even bead blasting will not remove the layers of paint on your whistle. Many whistles I have done require some wire wheel work to remove old paint. And as far as keeping the whistles original look or paint on it I feel there is nothing wrong with having your whistle look like new, after it once looked new when it was
put in service on the UP.
