I've read of them referred to as lumber doors. Some SG cars had top and bottom end doors, or a tall door as "lumber and rail doors."
An article in some old RR magazine mentioned that stock cars were the most used cars nationally for transporting rails.
Railroads wanted to keep stock cars busy when not needed for stock. WP&Y used them for steel drums, etc. as in this photo.
