The diesel is primarily for Positive Train Control, but they also use it for dynamic braking most of the time. I think you could see a shorter trip like this in the future with no diesel, assuming they figure out a standalone PTC system. 844 ran solo a handful of times in the 2010's with short trains, but that was before PTC. I doubt you'll see a long tour (like the 3 in 2019) without a diesel. My 2 cents.
