The 488 is recieving a Master Mechanic front end. The MM front end is how the engines were originally built. The C&TS guys are trying to come up with alternatives to oil conversions by trying different types of smokebox arrangements.
The screen around the cyclone was originally utilized on the 488. It was found effective in cinder control, but the smokebox filled with cinders every day and had to be opened up and cleaned out daily, otherwise the screen got choked up and the engine would not draft.
488 will be intersting to see and hear when it goes into service. The exhaust nozzle will be higher in the smokebox, and be of smaller diameter. This should make for a louder sharper exhaust.
Intersting point is that the K-27's and K-28's have MM front ends and are noticably sharper on thier stack music. Through recent history, they have started less fires dispite the fact that they generate more, larger cinders.
