This shot is of a short Sumpter Valley freight train headed by #1 (2nd). I am relying on the late Ron Harr who had this scan labeled as #1 because I can't see anything to distinguish it from #2. [Update: Thanks to the sharp eyes of Taylor Rush, this is in fact #2] The location could be a lot of place on the SVRy, but with such a short train, I have to wonder if it is on the line between Austin and Prairie City. The caboose on the rear is also #1. It doesn't show up in a lot of photos. As to date, the Sumpter Valley converted to knuckle couplers in 1910, so after that and before Jan. 1921, when Eng. #1 was in the round house fire and her cab was subsequently replaced with a steel one.
