injector question

I am an outside-frame aficionado but was unaware of this one, thank you J.B.Bane for posting! Fantastic locomotive!

Several pics on the SVRR.org website show SV14 with side-mount injectors typical of its 1906 construction:

but J.B.Bane's post and the pic below show the pipe extending to the top of the boiler ahead of the sand dome, suggesting it acquired a top-mount injector in a rebuild, like Uintah 30 (sorry about that guy blocking the tender, spoiling the shot with this ipad, apparently):
SV14.jpg
remarkably all 3 shots are from similar angle/sun angle From what is visible, my questions remain:

- was a top-mount injector added to SV14 in a rebuild? It's not visible in the photos, and the sharp elbows in the shadows suggest that the side-mount valves are still in place... if not, why is that pipe draped over the handrails? (temperature differential is a key factor in pumping water, correct?)
- what are the proper terms for these side/top mount injectors? What was the advantage of the top-mount that led to its adoption in later steam locos like K-28s & K-36s?
