Sadly, Jim, that approach fails more often than it succeeds. I volunteer as a brakeman for a tourist RR that lost it's insurance, flood damages to the track that we have no money to fix, and a steam loco that is laid up for a very long timeframe, for
the very reasons you just stated.
Nothing is running, probably for the rest of this year.
