Part of Kavolchick's purchase of the EBT in 1956 was the water utility for Robertsdale. The supply for the town came from some distance away, and was a buried octagonal wooden pipe.
By the 1980's when I did some work there, the pipe was failing every few weeks, and Stanley Hall and the shop crew would have to drop everything and head up there to hunt for the leak. When found, they would dig up the area, and splice in a piece of plastic pipe. I bet that was fun to adapt wood to plastic out in the woods, using plumbing supplies from the local hardware store.
