It was built a long time ago. I heard that the original plans for it referred to it as being for transferring sugar beets -- not mineral products. Sugar beets were once grown in the Owens Valley for only about one year which I believe was in 1918.

Back in April 2012 we had a thread about sugar beets in Colorado and I added this information:

Re: Narrow Gauge Sugar Beets on the SPng
The SP narrow gauge transfer trestle at Owneyo was originally built to transfer sugar beets. This back in about 1918 when one of the sugar beet processors tried to develop the Owens Valley as a source of supply. Sugar beets existed as a crop in the Owens Valley for only a season or two. The book The Lost Frontier: Water Diversion in the Growth and Destruction of Owens Valley Agriculture has about a page on the sugar beets.

The SP later found other used for the transfer trestle -- mineral products.
