Not all crittur crossings are on the highway.
Back in the 90s and 00s, a good frind of mine was the trails planner for the State of Colorado and, as a rail fan, a great proponent of Rails-to-Trails. Along the way he really pushed to get the mothballed D&RG/SP/UP Tennessee Pass turned into a Rails-to-Trails pathway and spent a lot of time studying it and trying to negotiate with the UP, obviously to no avail. He once got to ride the entire route on a speeder, the lucky dog. I sent him the recent Tennessee Pass rail proposal/decision (he’s been retired from state government for a decade or so) and he replied with the following photos.
On one of his trips taking photos along the route in 2008, he spotted this rather unique use for the D&RGW Tennessee Pass RoW above Minturn, Colorado. He said said that as a trails planner he had to deal with trails for hikers, bikers, skiers, equestrians, off-road/ORVs and such, but never trail usage like this.
He also thought the trail was a bit overcrowded.“Cattle car? We don. need no steenkin’ cattle car!"
