One thing about tourist railroads, they need the gift shop income to keep afloat. Most operations absolutely cannot keep going on the farebox only. The first time I learned this was when the Crab Orchard and Egyptian RR depot burned down, wasn't much later, and they only hauled freight. The principles of the company stated publicly that the following season without the gift shop was not viable. The lesson to be learned to all operators is get that side income coming in. Heck, even the CRRM makes it because of book sales!
