Re: Was D&RGW #482 Set Aside For Scrapping At One Time?

482 last operated in April of 1959, and was amoung the first locomotives to be parked and never run again - the other being #490. So, by the time 482 was photographed in Antonito in the fall of 1970, it had already been sitting in the weather for 11 years, supplying parts for the other operating locomotives. Notice 482 has already lost its number plate and builder's plates to some collector, along with its class lamps. The mechanical dept has taken the inspirators (injectors) as well as the air compressor.

490 was also parted out and losing its drivers and was placed on a poor defenceless idler flat to live out its days. 490 was finally scrapped around 1964. By that time the D&RGW seems to have decided not to scrap anymore locomotives and kept the remaining locomotives they took out of service as traffic demands dropped and flues times expired.
