I've read that several railroads used a 15kw Pyle turbogenerator for lighting commuter trains.

These specs are from the 1949 pyle catalog:

Type: "R"
Capacity: 15000W
Voltage: 64,120 & 230 D.C.
RPM full load: 3400
Height: 23-29/32"
Length: 48-19/32"
Width: 28"
Weight: 1220 lbs.

The next size down is the M-7-1/2 at 7500W with dimensions about 4" less in each way.

I could go either way on which model this is but I'd lean towards it being an R because M at 7500W should power about 185 40w bulbs and there are at least 30 sockets in a 2600 RI commuter car and six cars seems a a little short for the service.
