The goal is restoration and eventually offering some kind of operation with N-C-O equipment. Right now, a lot of effort is just getting these cars under cover as many have reached the point of falling apart if they spend much more time in the weather.
Also, there seems to be a growing appreciation for the N-C-O, at least in the areas it ran through, so some folks who have held on to these cars are now feeling like releasing them. Since we have secure covered storage, it presents a better option than sitting out in a field.
We recently found the remains of one of the very first class of N-C-O boxcar, built from "kits" created by a lumber company in Reno by the N-C-O's Reno shops. The carbody was documented as still standing around the late 1980s or early 1990s, but has since collapsed. Still, we are going to try and save what we can and reproduce at least one example of these odd cars eventually. We would like to save as much as we can before they follow this boxcar into a pile of collapsed timber.
Sadly, the N-C-O seems to have been a bit neglected except by a few folks, even though an amazing amount of equipment survives or did until recently, so we feel we need to take the initiative now before any more equipment disappears.
