Chemical leaching caused by acidic rain waters does happen even in active mining operation's, but it isn't a big deal as most people may think. I had a neighbor that worked at the Kennecott Copper Mines back in the 90's part of his job was to remove one of the old tunnels that the conveyor belt traveled to the concentrator from the crushers in the main pit. while uncovering some of the old timbers he had found that precipitation traveling through this tightly dense quartzite still would find natural seams and fault lines that lead to these old stopes, when he was removing the old truss works and framing in this tunnel he was literally pulling off solid copper precipitated stalactites off the timbers much gold, silver and zinc was recovered from this too. Fun stuff if you're into that kind of information.
