Smaller than what was then being used on standard gauge lines. Because the weights were lighter.
My favorite, Carson & Colorado, was built with 35# rail in 1880-1882. The Southern Pacific replaced that with 60# or 65# rail at selected locations on the trackage over Montgomery Pass and a significant relocation in the Owens Valley. A good part of the remaining line abandoned in 1960 still had its original rail. The C&C got some of its 35# came from the Oregon Railway and Navigation when that road replaced theirs with 60# -- in fact the C&C traded new 60# for the used 35#.
