The Pan-American Hotel is still there (in zona 1) and function quite nicely, great place for a meal. The buffet and service is great and reasonable. You can walk to the rail yards from there. Best go in a small group and not at night. For luxury, zona 10, not far from the airport, is best. That's where the night life is. Couples, with different sur names, staying in the same hotel room would not find any problems in 21th century Guatemala. Antque is a must see too. The trip from Puerto Barrios to Ciudad Guatemala is still rugged with great frontier scenery but much less forested. The locals are not ecologically sensitive and have cut down just about everything for fire wood. Once a green country, it's now more brown, with air pollution in Guatemala City. Still, heaven for steam oriented rail fans. See you all on Trains unlimited Guatemala tour in february 2001.
