We made a few sets of numbers for the fronts of the locos several years ago. The first set was Steel, and were designed to be painted (to prevent rust), and also to last longer than vinyl or just regular painted numbers. These disappeared, maybe before they even made it to the locos. We then were contacted by a different person from the railroad to remake them in stainless. These were applied to the engines, but not painted. The steel when polished would have been a shinier metal, and showed up better, but would suffer rust potential (which is why they were supposed to be painted). The stainless needed virtually no maintenance, but as a side effect when not in direct light ended up being very dark and hard to see....
Is it possible these were a test to see if the "chrome" or metal finish on the lettering would last longer, or possibly be more visible?
