Aren't you forgetting the main features of the Alamosa Branch? No curves for 53 miles (Mineral Hot Springs to Alamosa) and easy curves East of there to Round Hill. Mountains nearby on both sides by the time you get far enough East to find a curve that sharp.
Ignoring the "taken from the San Juan" in the original post, and that almost every piece of equipment has the "flying" Rio Grande (which I've not seen much other than on tenders in pictures on the branch) the Santa Fe branch seems highly unlikely. By the "flying" era there just wasn't that much traffic on the branch on any given day. And it just doesn't look like any of the parts of the branch I've examined close up and personal (mostly North/East of Espanola) or any pics I've seen from back in the day.
Lava Siding looks like a good candidate to me.
Wayne, do you have at least an approximate date for this picture? Pre-war or post war, that sort of thing?
Hank
PS "Coach in the 280s", if other than 280 or 284, would mean pre-'43. 0517 just means before '62, so not much help there.
