Even though the boat trips are not running, there is a very nice relatively short and level hiking trail going
downstream in the Black Canyon where the railroad did not go. I have never heard it mentioned in the railfan community but walking the trail gives a good exposure to what building a railroad in that canyon involved and why the decision was made to exit. It is perhaps the closest experience to the Black Canyon of the Denver & Rio Grande as you are right at the river level and the water is anything but slack...
The trail dead ends a mile or so downstream and is reached by a footbridge across the river (photo from the opposite side looking at the railroad grade just below the dam):
