The bar can be easily removed by lifting it up to clear brackets just inside the smokebox on each side of the opening. The bar belonging to this locomotive can be seen resting on the deck just under the smokebox door hinge. Being able to remove the bar makes access to the smokebox possible.
This type of smokebox door closing device is used on standard gauge locomotives as well, making access to the front end quick and easy, especially handy when cleaning flues and shoveling cinders
