Even with soft-water and all the different boiler treatment chemicals, scale can develops. It just a little easier (usually) to rattle out scale and clean out "mud".

Having operated and maintained Babcock-Wilcock stationary boilers (also couple locomotives for fun), titetrateing boiler water tratments, and operating a water- softing plant.
