It's difficult for me to remember details from 30+ years ago, John –
. . . and conditions have probably changed quite a lot with ATVs ruining roads everywhere – but IIRC it was quite driveable in late summer from the west up to and just beyond "Gunsight Notch" and the remains of the trestle there, but near the summit a deep cut was filled with what appeared to be several years' worth of snow well on its way to becoming a small glacier.
At that time there was a "road" – or at least a pair of ruts – that provided a bypass uphill from the cut which my 4WD Toyota 4-Runner negotiated easily but which a 2WD sedan or even an ordinary (non-raised) pickup could not traverse. IIRC that one spot was the only problem area, and the rest of the road – being on top of the old RR grade – would not be a problem for most cars.
