The overhaul of #346 is proceeding at the Strasburg Rail Road shops. About 1/6 of the second barrel course has been replaced due to corrosion and cracking. Several patches have been installed in the firebox, and about ten staybolts worth of patches are being worked on now to complete the firebox. The front flue sheet has been replaced, and tubes are being cut and prepped for installation.
All work on the drivers and driving boxes is done. Work is proceeding on the shoes and wedges. The lead truck lateral is being Babbitted today. Work on the equalizing will begin shortly, and when completed, the engine can be lowered onto its wheels.
A photo of the barrel patch being riveted can be seen on the Strasburg Rail Road’s Mechanical Department web site.
