Diesels would have problems pulling the trains over that hill though. They don't have the tourque.
Here I am 17 years old and farther away from the steam era than you guys were when you were 17, and theres NO WAY I would think about replacing that beautiful locomotive, for two diesel engines.
With the spark arrestors on and atleast 5 feet of weeds basically eliminated on either side of the right of way this year, they won't have any problems...The spark arrestors keep the big cinders from going to far from the railroad and with hardly any brush near the railroad, atleast within 5 feet of each side of the ties, they will hardly start any fires at all. I just wish the weather would permit them to not have to worry about the spark arrestors on there at all.
They steam better without them, not a HUGE difference, but better...besides, without the spark arrestors on, most of the cinders that go flying into the air, by they time they come down they have burned out anyway, especially if theres any kind of wind or if its chilly out...
But now I think its not the C&TS' choice anyway, when it comes to fires and cinders and spark arrestors, whatever the forest service says, goes.
