Here is a photo of the
very first train across the Trout Brook bridge:
The bridge is in the background, behind the caboose. The Gantry (named Elmer
), is mounted to the leading flat car (there is an orange track cart carrying rail joiners directly in front of the flat), and unloads bundles of ties onto the graded ROW. The ties are distributed, and then the gantry delivers rail onto those ties. Rail joiners are applied while the rails are still partly supported by the gantry winch, temporary gauge clamps are spaced out along the new rails, and the train moves forward ... the spiking crew follows behind the train.
