How are the ash pans on coal burning locomotive emptied?

How are the ash pans on coal burning locomotive emptied? Is there a trap door in the center of the pan or are the ashes scrapped
over the sides of the pan? The last axel on the Rio Grande narrow gauge C class and the trailing truck of the K class is right under
the ash pan. How are the ashes removed without all that grit and crud falling into the bearings? I've mostly seen oil burning engines
and am not that familiar with coal burners. Thank you for your answers.
