As a Conductor on the SVRR, with hat in hand when giving the slow signal as we come up to the station at Sumpter or McEwen, I will start to slowy wave hat in hand to let the engineer know that I am about to give the washout/stop signal. Note at time both the engineer and conductor are on the side of the train opposite of the platform. Of course the engine crew has their own stop markers at both stations usually a large stone or some such thing.
