Folks,
An old time resource that I have is the Narrow Gauge Railways of America by Howard Fleming and a forward by Lucius Beebe in 1949. My copy is signed by the authors. I contains some neat old wood cut illustrations.

Of course the already mentioned Hilton book has a lot of good information as well!
