Experience the RGS
I often wonder what I would have done differently my last summer growing up in Telluride if I knew that the next time I returned, some 20 years later, everything would be different and that what I cared about there would be gone.
Second chances are rare.
This August, many of you will join me on the Cumbres & Toltec for the Victorian Iron Horse Roundup, where we’ll bring four Victorian-era steam engines back to run on the rails of a land that time forgot. For me, and I imagine for all of us, getting together near the end of the season will be a needed moment of celebration having finally emerged from the cloud of isolation we have endured for more than a year.
But after that moment I wonder if you would like to join us in the time machine for a trip to the Rio Grande Southern in the 1940’s.
A third party is considering running a "special charter" following the Victorian Iron Horse Roundup they are currently calling it “Sunset on the RGS.” In this, we will renumber engine #463 to #455 and brand the locomotive with the traditional Rio Grande Southern sunset lettering. RGS #20 will also join us and we’ll run a double headed freight including RGS caboose #0400. A Galloping Goose or two may be encountered along the way just the way it was on the RGS before the rails were abandoned to fading photographs and foggy memories. That is, if there is enough interest to do so.
We can all appreciate the value of time and understand that there may not be much left of it to enjoy and celebrate. That is what I think about. When the sun does set on this coming season, won’t you want to have said you were there at last light and have seen all its glory?
