VueScan
I'll second that motion -
I've been using VueScan for several years now. In addition to all my own AFT, older C&TS, and D&RGW photos, all of Ernie's 1968 B&W that I scanned & posted during 2018, and all of those I've done recently for Olaf were done using VueScan to control the scanning process and Photoshop Elements 10 for retouching. It's very intuitive and easy to learn — I have seldom had to refer to manuals or ask for help except with extremely challenging poorly-exposed originals. SFAIK, it works well with all of the major brands of scanners; I use it with both my Epson V600 flatbed and Nikon 9000 scanners.
