That prior to the discovery of oil, Hughes' property near Chromo was one of the largest dairy farms in southern Colorado, and regularly made bulk shipments of milk to Cloverleaf, Inc., a large ice-cream producer in Alamosa

Hughes' milk was well-known for its high butterfat content, which was rivaled only by Bob Roemer's farm just east of Boulder, CO, very close to where Haich O'Mannder of the CRRM currently resides. See [
