This restoration of caboose 0548, originally 49, involved every member of the then operation and restoration volunteers at the CRRM. Project was under the direction of late volunteer and CRRM board member, Paul Luning.
Paul's emphasis was on saving every part that was restorable. One example was splicing new sections into the original cupola roof bows. The replicated four wheel "truck" and equalizer system were fabricated by volunteers Randy Worwag and Carl Averdung. The research that went into the correct restoration was mind boggling. Correct paint colors, stove pipe configuration, and cupola brake wheel mounting, to name a few. The bunk cushions were duplicated using striped button tufted mattress ticking as per original. The L&RP publication tells the story. The L&RP writer asked Paul Luning if he would ever attempt another caboose restoration he replied,"hell no".
