Thanks Joe. At least putting a name to them is a big help.

I did some CPR photo research (since I found it on a CPR line). Good loco broadsides showed these horizontal covers on their 1880s engine tenders, but the lid types started appearing by 1890. Later 1900/10s photos show that the earlier covers were replaced by lids.

I also looked a photos of cars in service, and as often as not the horizontal covers were just dangling loose. That could be why they were discontinued, in favor of the sprung lids that would always have a positive seal.

For some NG relevance tho, that old Toronto Grey & Bruce lid I posted has to be at least 1875, because that was the last year the line bought cars. So the lid style was used earlier as well.
