The only problem there is that the line went from Johnson City as far as Cranberry, a mining town which wasn't exactly doing all that well by then. There were communities along the way but they got what they needed by LcL and truck long before then.
I doubt container operations would have done much for them as there wasn't anywhere between those two points to serve.
I think the only way it would have continued would be if something
truly valuable got found up in those mountains neat Cranberry (or maybe, just maybe, north of there where a portion of the line torn up after 1940 could have been rebuilt) as there weren't many excellent roads between those points at that time.
