My ten penneth.

Nobody knows, a lot of speculation seems to focus on black and dark green.

My impression is that the fancy colour schemes of the early years had pretty much gone by 1883 and certainly by 1885.

Also seems that the locomotives may have been cleaned more often in the early years.

The paints at the time seemed to be mixed to order but they were specific about the formulae so there shoukd not be too much variation.
