The D&RGW looked into the mallets and into duplicating the successful K-36's. The one mallet was a K-37 style new frame and SG boiler.
Money eventually caused the D&RGW to go for the K-37 - they could not scrape up the money for new K-36s.
It would have been quite interesting to see a 2-8-8-2 fighting its way up Cumbres or Marshall.
I would guess that an L-53 would haul about 50% more cars up Cumbres than a K-36/K-37 and an L-75 would at least double a K-36/K-37.
