Being raised in Canada, in 1960s elementary school we learned more about your Civil War and the American Revolution than our own history. Most likely a product of having only American textbooks in the days before we had our own. Learned a bit about building the CPR in later grades, had to memorize the kings and queens of England, but nothing at all that I can recall about WWI or WWII.
Author Pierre Berton popularized Canadian history in the 1970s, and actually with a trilogy of books on building the CPR. The railway, along with the North West Mounted Police (today’s RCMP), peacefully opened up the Canadian west. Berton always joked that our western expansion was a lot less violent than the USA experience, mainly because it’s hard to quick draw a six shooter when you’re wearing three pair of mitts.
Cheers,
Ralph
