I know you're not American so I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt her. though I think you already know this and are just playing devils advocate.
In this country, there could be tax advantages to making a donation of a historic piece of history,. even in the 1950s.
The fact that some railroads took advantage of that, and some didn't, indicates a motivation above and beyond just what makes financial sense, one way or another.
