Huntsville & Lake of Bays Update

Friend Eric Motton is a fireman on the Huntsville & Lake of Bays Rly in Huntsville, Ontario, and he sent me these photos. Like most lines they were sidelined by Covid, but did manage to open up in mid-July with their diesel. The railway is in cottage country north of Toronto. Because of this there were lots of people around with nowhere much else to go, so despite having to reduce capacity they managed to do fairly well financially.

They also took the time off to do the boiler inspection of their regular locomotive #2, which will now be all set to go next year. This was originally scheduled for over the winter, but it’s much warmer now! Other work included relining the water tower with a membrane, as it was starting to rust at the bottom. Some trackwork was also done out back to provide better access to the shop bay that houses smaller locomotive #1. Both locomotives are 3'6" gauge, and ran on the original H&LOB “Portage” Rly that linked two lakes to the east of town.

Here's the link to a thread on the original H&LOB railway from a few weeks ago. [ngdiscussion.net]

Cheers,
Ralph
