but there
are automatically controlled steam boilers, and some of those are even installed in railroad locomotives.
For instance, early in the diesel era, when passenger cars were still steam-heated, some locomotives had steam generators to provide steam heat to the passenger cars that previously had received steam from the steam locomotive.
Quoting from the WP GP7 operations locomotive manual, steam generator section:
