Tractive Effort and Tractive Force are one and the same thing. Tractive Effort is a number created by a formula utilizing the boiler pressure, the size of the cylinders, and diameter of the drive wheels. The number derived can be used with other formulas to determine the amount tonnage a locomotive can start and pull on a particular grade around a certain curve.
.85 BP X CS X (CDXCD) / DD = Tractive Effort in lbs.
BP = Boiler Pressure in lbs/sq. in.
CS = Cylinder Stroke
CD = Cylinder Diameter
DD Driver Diameter
