I’ve heard of numerous engines when they were converted to burn oil they were very unsuccessful and far less powerful, but most of those cases they were converted wrong, or an insufficient amount of burners. Reading 2100 and Union Pacific 4005 for example were converted to oil, but 2100 lacked the correct steaming capacity and was basically being pushed by a diesel, and 4005 being so big needed multiple burners, and was converted back to coal. Canadian Pacific 2317 was also built as a coal burner and converted to oil by CP. Steamtown wanted it to burn oil for economic reasons, but again, it lacked the capacity to make enough steam on long hard runs.
